Moulana Yusuf Laher

Moulana Yusuf Laher was born in the year 1961 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He schooled and attended Maktab in Port Elizabeth. Among his Maktab teachers were; Marhoom Haji Fu’aad Jappie, Marhoom Hafiz Ayoob Saheb, Hadhrat Moulana A.S.Desai Saheb and Hadhrat Moulana Qaasim O.V. Saheb.

 

He left for India in 1976 to further his Islamic studies. He took admission at Jaami’ah Islaamiyah Dabhel, Gujarat, India and studied there for a few years. He completed the Qiraa’ah of Imam Hafs under Hadhrat Qaari Mohammed Ahmadullah Saheb (Daamat Barakaatuhum). Among his other teachers in Dabhel were; Marhoom Hadhrat Moulana Waliyullah Saheb, Hadhrat Moulana Abdul Awwal Saheb, Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf Saheb Kaawi, Hadhrat Moulana Fadhlur Rahmaan Saheb A’azimi, Marhoom Hadhrat Moulana Ghulam Saheb, Marhoom Hadhrat Moulana Hamdullah Saheb and Hadhrat Moulana Ismail Saheb Chaaswi.

 

Thereafter he took admission at Miftaahul Uloom Jalalabad, U.P. India and completed the Aalim course there. His teachers here were; Hadhrat Moulana Mohammed Maseehullah Saheb, Marhoom Hadhrat Moulana Yaamin Saheb Jalalabadi, Marhoom Hadhrat Mufti Naseer Ahmad Saheb Idrispuri, Marhoom Hadhrat Moulana Yaasin Saheb, Marhoom Hadhrat Qaari Abdur Raheem Saheb, Hadhrat Moulana Aqeelur Rahmaan Saheb and Hadhrat Moulana Yaamin Saheb Idrispuri.

 

He first became Bay’at to Maseehul Ummat Hadhrat Moulana Mohammed Maseehullah Saheb (Rahmatullaahi Alayh). After Hadhrat’s demise, to Aarif Billaah Hadhrat Moulana Shaah Hakeem Mohammed Akhtar Saheb (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) and received Khilaafat from Hadhrat. After his demise he became Bay’at to his son Hadhrat Moulana Mohammed Mazhar Saheb (Daamat Barakaatuhum) and has also received Khilaafat from him.

 

He also received Khilaafat from Hadhrat Mufti Azeezur Rahmaan Saheb (Daamat Barakaatuhum) of Pakistan.

 

Moulana assists in answering questions on www.askmufti.co.za and also assists in answers for a few other websites. He writes and translates books and articles, many of which are on this site. 

 

He previously served on the Ta’leemi (educational) board of Al Miftaah Trust, Cape Town, assisting with preparation of text books, exams, etc. This Trust has approximately thirty Maktabs under its wing. This also includes a Madrasah for girls studying the Aalimah course.

 

He also served on Al Miftaah Trust Malawi. This Trust has approximately sixty Maktabs running in Malawi.

 

He now serves on the Faydhul Abraar Trust. This Trust has Maktabs in Cape Town. The Trust is in the process of establishing a girls only Madresah in Malawi. The Trust is headed by Moulana Shabbir Ahmed Rajah (Daamat Barakaatuhum)

 

Moulana is also involved in social and welfare, assisting people with advice and other

needs.

Mufti Siraj Desai

Born 1956 in North End, Port Elizabeth. Mufti Siraj attended St Marks School until Grade 7. He did his early Madresa education at Humphries Street Musjid. Early teachers included late Hafiz Abdul Muttalib Patel and Mr Syria who put Mufti into Qur’aan. Moulana Moosa Moosagie started Mufti on Hifz and he completed 8 paras.

 

In 1971 at 13, Mufti left for India where he completed his Hifz in 6 months in Jalalabad under Moulana Irshaad Ali Saheb. Mufti returned to SA that year. In 1972 he went to Ladysmith where he did Hifz revision by Hadhrat Moulana Ismail Saheb Kathrada. He performed his first Taraweeh at Ladysmith’s Central Musjid.

 

1973-76 Mufti Siraj taught Maktab in Musjidul Fuqara and started the Aalim course under Hadhrat Moulana A.S. Desai Saheb. In 1977 Mufti went to India and completed 4th-6th year Aalim course and 2 years Iftaa. Among his teachers was Moulana Maseehullah Rahimahullah.

 

Back in SA, Mufti took on the Maktab at Musjidul Fuqara and Imaamat. The Maktab got land in 1998. A Musjid as well as Darul Uloom, the first in the Cape, were built. Over 50 Hufaaz have qualified and others have gone on to complete the Aalim course in other Darul Ulooms.

 

Mufti Siraj Desai serves as Imam at Musjid Abubakr at the Darul Uloom, is a member of the National Board of Muftis, and SANHA’s board of Muftis. 

 

The Darul Uloom is the nerve centre of many projects initiated by Mufti: arranging Jumu’ahs and Taraaweeh for the Eastern Cape, running Maktabs, EC Muslim Prison Board, publications and more.

 

Mufti has authored several books on Islam. He answers questions via email, phone, fax, the Ask Mufti website www.askmufti.co.za and an SMS service, the first in S.A. He also runs Q&A sessions on Muslim radio stations like Channel Islam International, Radio Islam and Radio IFM.

 

He was first Bay’at to Hadhrat Moulana Maseehullah Saheb (Rahmatullaahi Alayh). Thereafter he became Bay’at to Hadhrat Moulana Haji Farooq Saheb (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) and received Khilaafat from him.
