A Method of Taubah (Repentence)

Ml Yusuf Laher

It is mentioned in a Hadeeth that when a person seeks forgiveness from a sin, it is as if he did not commit that sin at all. (Ibni Maajah V2 P1419).

No matter how big the sins are or when they were committed, they will be forgiven by Allah when you repent. If the sin involved rights of others, then with repentance unto Allah, the rights of the other persons have to be fulfilled or forgiveness has to be sought from those persons too. When the rights of others are involved, repentance unto Allah Ta'aala alone will not suffice. Fulfilment of the right or forgiveness has to be sought from the aggrieved.

Allah Ta'aala says in the Qur'aan:

O MY SERVANTS WHO HAVE WRONGED AGAINST THEMSELVES! DO NOT DESPAIR OF THE MERCY OF ALLAH! SURELY ALLAH FORGIVES ALL SINS. UNDOUBTEDLY HE IS MOST FORGIVING, MOST MERCIFUL. (Surah Zumar, verse 53)

VERILY ALLAH DOES NOT FORGIVE THE SIN OF (SHIRK) ATTRIBUTING PARTNERS TO HIM, BUT HE FORGIVES ANY SIN BESIDES THIS FOR WHOSOEVER HE WISHES. (Surah Nisaa, verse 48)

At the time of seeking forgiveness (Taubah) keep the following points in mind:

* You should not be involved in the sin at the time of Taubah.

* You should have regret and remorse over your sins.

* You should promise Allah Ta'aala that you will not return to that sin again.

Any sin, irrespective of how big it is, is forgiven through making Taubah. Turn towards Allah and He will turn towards you.

When you fall, do you remain where you have fallen or do you get up and walk again? The same applies to sinning; every time you commit sin, turn to Allah Ta'aala seeking forgiveness. One who has not given up sin cannot afford to give up seeking forgiveness. Keep on seeking forgiveness after sinning, even if the sin is being repeated. A person who seeks forgiveness every time after sinning will not be counted amongst the habitual sinners, and this is no small achievement.

At the same time, every effort has to be made to avoid sin, and especially those factors that lead to sin. One day Inshaa Allah Ta'aala those sins will be given up completely.

A person should resort to Taubah after committing a sin and make a promise unto Allah Ta'aala that the sin will not be committed again. Sins are forgiven and cleared from ones name through sincere Taubah. If one is by the means, give out some Sadaqah. Sadaqah extinguishes the wrath of Allah.

You should perform two Rakaahs Taubah Salaah as follows:

Recite Surah Kaafiroon (Qul Yaa Ayyuhal Kaafiroon) after Surah Faatihah in the first Rakaah. Recite Surah Nasr (Idhaa Jaa'a Nasrullaahi Wal Fath) in the second Rakaah after Surah Faatihah. If you do not know these two Surahs, any other Surah will do. After the Salaah recite Istighfaar (Astaghfirullah, etc.) in abundance. Thereafter make Du'aa and seek repentance. Also make a promise unto Allah that you will try your utmost to refrain from it in future. While you are at it, repent from all other sins, committed knowingly or unknowingly. Ask Allah to assist you in warding off sin. When repenting after the Salaah of Taubah, shed tears over your sin; and if you can’t shed tears, at least make the face like a crying person.

May Allah Ta'aala accept your Taubah and grant you protection, Aameen.
